My Role In the Project -
I was called in to bring the remote controls to life, along with several smaller aesthetic details.
This project had an extremely tight deadline, ~3 weeks from first call with the client to final delivery of 100+ functional units. (Including an injection mold and hand modifying 1500 buttons…)
The client came to us with a mood board that consisted of a bunch of retro remote controls, I ordered a few examples online to more closely inspect their design language.
After some preliminary CAD and approval from the client I finalized the production files and started an rapid turn injection mold for the 3 primary files, the front, back, and button plates. Because of the speed required (and for budgetary reasons) the button’s we’re designed onto a runner and gate system and had to be cleared from the gate by hand during final integration.
While the Injection Mold was being completed I was managing external electrical and software design teams. The design needed to accept the users keying in “TV” stations and playing back sounds (which had not yet been recorded).
After a hectic integration week the project was completed on time and within budget and went on to receive critical acclaim.
While I was only a small part of the effort it was inspiring to take on such a large client with such a crazy deadline.
*Other aspects I helped on;
The 6 buttons on the face of the shoe box were all 3D printed in house, hand polished to 1000 grit and red nail polish was carefully applied to each of the button faces.
The nest for the remote within the shoebox was giving the box vendor some trouble so I did a quick dieline sketch for them.
The stick-on rubber feet for the shoebox were a generic adhesive type from McMaster Carr, I had the pleasure of introducing the project lead from 247LS to the wonderful world of McMaster.
